How Neurofeedback Supports Post-Concussion Recovery

Understanding Concussions and Their Impact

A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) caused by a blow to the head or violent shaking of the body. While symptoms often subside within a few weeks, many people experience post-concussion syndrome (PCS), which can last for months or even years. Common symptoms include:

  • Headaches and migraines
  • Memory problems
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Mood swings and irritability
  • Sleep disturbances

These issues often stem from disrupted brainwave patterns and impaired neural communication, making targeted therapies like neurofeedback invaluable.

What Is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is a non-invasive therapy that uses real-time brainwave monitoring to help individuals retrain their brains. By providing visual or auditory feedback based on brainwave activity, this therapy encourages the brain to create healthier patterns. Over time, neurofeedback helps restore balance and improve overall cognitive and emotional function.

How Neurofeedback Supports Post-Consussion Recovery

Neurofeedback plays a vital role in addressing the lingering effects of concussions. Here’s how it helps:

1. Promotes Neural Healing

After a concussion, certain areas of the brain may become overactive or underactive. Neurofeedback helps normalize brainwave activity, fostering healing and reducing symptoms like brain fog and anxiety.

2. Improves Focus and Memory

By targeting regions associated with attention and memory, neurofeedback can enhance cognitive performance, making it easier to return to work or school.

3. Reduces Headaches and Migraines

Many post-concussion patients experience debilitating headaches. Neurofeedback therapy helps regulate brain activity, reducing the frequency and intensity of these episodes.

4. Supports Emotional Stability

Mood swings, irritability, and depression are common after a concussion. Neurofeedback promotes balance in emotional centers of the brain, leading to greater emotional regulation and well-being.

5. Enhances Sleep Quality

Sleep disturbances are another common issue post-concussion. Neurofeedback trains the brain to achieve more restful states, improving sleep quality and overall recovery.

The Neurofeedback Process

The process is simple, safe, and tailored to each patient’s needs:

  1. Initial Assessment: A qEEG brain mapping session identifies areas of dysregulation.
  2. Custom Treatment Plan: Based on the qEEG results, a personalized neurofeedback protocol is developed.
  3. Therapy Sessions: Patients engage in regular sessions where feedback is provided to train the brain.
  4. Progress Tracking: Improvements are monitored over time, with adjustments made as needed.

Why Choose Neurofeedback for Post-Concussion Recovery?

Unlike medication, which often masks symptoms, neurofeedback addresses the root cause of post-concussion issues. It’s a drug-free, non-invasive therapy with long-lasting benefits.

Sydney Focht, MA, LPC

Clinical Director & Counselor

I specialize in working with women in their 20s to 50s who struggle with self-worth, self-esteem, and the guilt that often comes with prioritizing themselves. Finding self-trust and the ability to feel worthy of happiness are common topics in my work. My clients tend to put off therapy because they downplay their struggles, describing their pain as ‘not that big of a deal.’ Many of them grew up in households where expressing emotions wasn’t encouraged and they are still looking for security now. My goal is to create a space where you feel completely free to be yourself—no pressure, no expectations. Therapy with me isn’t about either of us being ‘perfect’—it’s more about you feeling safe, seen, and supported as you figure things out in a way that works for you. I prioritize meaningful conversations that get to the heart of the issue, getting to the root and out of surface level conversation quickly. Going through my own therapy has given me a deeper understanding of what it’s like to be in the client’s seat, and it’s made me even more passionate about helping others find the support that truly works for them. My clients describe me as focused, compassionate, nonjudgmental, and down-to-earth. I truly love what I do and that comes through in my work! I’m a person-centered therapist, but I often integrate elements of Motivational Interviewing, CBT, and IFS.
