What Does Contempt Look Like?

  1. Sarcastic Remarks Sarcasm is often used to belittle or mock a partner, disguising hostility under the guise of humor. Statements like, “Oh, you’re such a genius, aren’t you?” when a partner makes a mistake can be hurtful and dismissive.
  2. Eye-Rolling This non-verbal gesture is a classic sign of contempt. Eye-rolling expresses disdain and a lack of respect, signaling that one partner considers the other’s thoughts or feelings as unworthy.
  3. Sneering and Hostile Facial Expressions Sneering or making hostile facial expressions during conversations or arguments communicates a clear message of disrespect. These expressions can be subtle but powerful indicators of contempt.
  4. Insults and Name-Calling Direct insults or name-calling, such as calling a partner “stupid” or “useless,” are blatant forms of contempt. These words are designed to hurt and degrade the other person.
  5. Mocking Imitation Imitating a partner’s voice, gestures, or words in a mocking way is another example of contempt. This behavior trivializes the partner’s feelings and shows a lack of empathy.
  6. Dismissing Concerns When one partner dismisses the other’s concerns or worries as trivial or unimportant, it is a form of contempt. Statements like, “You’re overreacting, this is nothing,” invalidate the partner’s emotions and can lead to feelings of isolation.
  7. Talking Over the Other Person Interrupting or talking over a partner during a conversation shows a lack of respect for their opinion. It implies that what the other person has to say is not worth listening to.
  8. Public Humiliation Humiliating a partner in front of others, whether through jokes or direct criticism, is a severe form of contempt. Public humiliation can cause lasting damage to a relationship by eroding trust and self-esteem.

I specialize in working with women in their 20s to 50s who struggle with self-worth, self-esteem, and the guilt that often comes with prioritizing themselves. Finding self-trust and the ability to feel worthy of happiness are common topics in my work. My clients tend to put off therapy because they downplay their struggles, describing their pain as ‘not that big of a deal.’ Many of them grew up in households where expressing emotions wasn’t encouraged and they are still looking for security now. My goal is to create a space where you feel completely free to be yourself—no pressure, no expectations. Therapy with me isn’t about either of us being ‘perfect’—it’s more about you feeling safe, seen, and supported as you figure things out in a way that works for you. I prioritize meaningful conversations that get to the heart of the issue, getting to the root and out of surface level conversation quickly. Going through my own therapy has given me a deeper understanding of what it’s like to be in the client’s seat, and it’s made me even more passionate about helping others find the support that truly works for them. I’m EMDR-trained and draw from person-centered, gestalt, DBT, and somatic practices. Whether we’re working with the nervous system, processing painful memories, or exploring patterns with curiosity, my goal is to create a safe, collaborative space where you feel supported, present, and empowered to grow. I especially enjoy working with athletes, creative people, students, and outdoor adventurers who value resilience, beauty, and balance. Alongside therapy and grounding practices, I also offer neurofeedback as another powerful pathway for nervous system regulation and healing. Outside the office, you’ll often find me climbing, fly fishing, running trails, foraging, or relaxing in the grass under the aspens. My love for movement, play, and nature continually inspires how I show up with clients.
