qEEG Brain Mapping for PTSD Recovery

Neurofeedback as a Non-Invasive Option for Chronic Pain Management

Understanding Neurofeedback and Pain Perception

Neurofeedback is a form of brain training that uses real-time monitoring of brainwave activity. During a session, sensors measure electrical patterns in the brain and provide feedback through visual or auditory signals. This process allows the brain to learn how to regulate its activity, promoting healthier patterns.

For chronic pain, research shows that certain brain regions become overactive, amplifying the perception of pain. By training the brain to adjust these patterns, neurofeedback can help reduce the intensity of pain signals and restore balance.

Benefits of Neurofeedback for Chronic Pain

People struggling with chronic pain often turn to neurofeedback because it offers several unique advantages:

  • Non-invasive and drug-free, eliminating the risk of side effects from medications
  • Helps retrain the brain’s response to pain signals
  • Can improve sleep, mood, and overall quality of life
  • Provides long-term benefits with consistent training

Studies suggest that patients who complete neurofeedback training often experience a reduction in pain intensity and a greater ability to cope with discomfort.

The Process of Neurofeedback Therapy

A typical neurofeedback session begins with brain mapping, also known as qEEG, to identify irregular patterns linked to chronic pain. From there, a personalized training plan is developed. During sessions, individuals watch videos or interact with computer-based activities that respond to their brainwave activity.

When the brain produces desired patterns, the system rewards it with positive feedback. Over time, this conditioning teaches the brain to function more efficiently, reducing the amplification of pain signals.

Who Can Benefit from Neurofeedback for Chronic Pain?

Neurofeedback is particularly beneficial for individuals with conditions such as:

  • Fibromyalgia
  • Migraines
  • Back and neck pain
  • Neuropathic pain
  • Post-surgical or injury-related pain

It is also a supportive option for those who have tried other treatments without long-term success.

How Neurofeedback Supports Post-Concussion RecoveryTaking a Holistic Approach

Neurofeedback works best when combined with other holistic approaches such as counseling, mindfulness, physical activity, and healthy lifestyle changes. By addressing both the physical and emotional aspects of chronic pain, patients often see greater improvements in their daily lives.

Chronic pain can feel overwhelming, but it does not have to define your life. With neurofeedback for chronic pain, individuals have the opportunity to retrain their brains, reduce discomfort, and regain a sense of control—without the need for invasive treatments or long-term medications.

Sydney Focht, MA, LPC

Clinical Director & Counselor

I specialize in working with women in their 20s to 50s who struggle with self-worth, self-esteem, and the guilt that often comes with prioritizing themselves. Finding self-trust and the ability to feel worthy of happiness are common topics in my work. My clients tend to put off therapy because they downplay their struggles, describing their pain as ‘not that big of a deal.’ Many of them grew up in households where expressing emotions wasn’t encouraged and they are still looking for security now. My goal is to create a space where you feel completely free to be yourself—no pressure, no expectations. Therapy with me isn’t about either of us being ‘perfect’—it’s more about you feeling safe, seen, and supported as you figure things out in a way that works for you. I prioritize meaningful conversations that get to the heart of the issue, getting to the root and out of surface level conversation quickly. Going through my own therapy has given me a deeper understanding of what it’s like to be in the client’s seat, and it’s made me even more passionate about helping others find the support that truly works for them. My clients describe me as focused, compassionate, nonjudgmental, and down-to-earth. I truly love what I do and that comes through in my work! I’m a person-centered therapist, but I often integrate elements of Motivational Interviewing, CBT, and IFS.
