Neurofeedback Sessions for Depression

What Are Neurofeedback Sessions?

Neurofeedback is a form of biofeedback that measures brainwave activity in real time. By monitoring and training the brain to regulate its own patterns, neurofeedback encourages healthier neural activity. This is particularly beneficial for individuals struggling with depression, where brainwave imbalances often play a significant role.

How Does Neurofeedback Help with Depression?

Neurofeedback sessions for depression work by addressing the underlying neural dysfunctions associated with the condition. Key benefits include:

  1. Balancing Brainwave Activity
    • Depression often correlates with overactivity in certain brain regions and underactivity in others. Neurofeedback helps recalibrate these patterns for improved mood regulation.
  2. Reducing Symptoms of Anxiety and Stress
    • Chronic stress is a common factor in depression. Neurofeedback promotes relaxation and reduces stress by training the brain to operate in calmer states.
  3. Enhancing Emotional Regulation
    • By improving the brain’s ability to process emotions, neurofeedback empowers individuals to manage depressive episodes more effectively.
  4. Boosting Energy and Motivation
    • Neurofeedback sessions can improve brain function, leading to increased energy levels and a more optimistic outlook on life.

What to Expect During Neurofeedback Sessions for Depression

During a neurofeedback session:

  • Sensors are placed on the scalp to measure brainwave activity.
  • The data is displayed on a monitor, often in the form of visual or auditory feedback.
  • As the brain learns to adjust its activity toward healthier patterns, individuals gradually experience symptom relief.

Each session typically lasts 30–60 minutes, and most individuals notice improvements after a series of sessions tailored to their needs.

Why Choose Neurofeedback for Depression?

Unlike medication, which often comes with side effects and addresses symptoms temporarily, neurofeedback targets the root cause of depression—brainwave imbalance. This non-invasive therapy provides sustainable, drug-free results that improve overall brain function and mental well-being.

Research Supporting Neurofeedback for Depression

Numerous studies highlight the effectiveness of neurofeedback for treating depression. Research shows that consistent neurofeedback sessions can lead to significant reductions in depressive symptoms by enhancing neural communication and promoting resilience.

Sydney Focht, MA, LPC

Clinical Director & Counselor

I specialize in working with women in their 20s to 50s who struggle with self-worth, self-esteem, and the guilt that often comes with prioritizing themselves. Finding self-trust and the ability to feel worthy of happiness are common topics in my work. My clients tend to put off therapy because they downplay their struggles, describing their pain as ‘not that big of a deal.’ Many of them grew up in households where expressing emotions wasn’t encouraged and they are still looking for security now. My goal is to create a space where you feel completely free to be yourself—no pressure, no expectations. Therapy with me isn’t about either of us being ‘perfect’—it’s more about you feeling safe, seen, and supported as you figure things out in a way that works for you. I prioritize meaningful conversations that get to the heart of the issue, getting to the root and out of surface level conversation quickly. Going through my own therapy has given me a deeper understanding of what it’s like to be in the client’s seat, and it’s made me even more passionate about helping others find the support that truly works for them. My clients describe me as focused, compassionate, nonjudgmental, and down-to-earth. I truly love what I do and that comes through in my work! I’m a person-centered therapist, but I often integrate elements of Motivational Interviewing, CBT, and IFS.
