Using Neurofeedback to Improve Sleep Quality in Adults

Understanding Insomnia in Adults

Insomnia affects an estimated 30% of adults worldwide. Common causes include stress, anxiety, poor sleep hygiene, and underlying mental health conditions. Over time, chronic sleep deprivation can impair memory, concentration, mood regulation, and even immune function.

Many individuals rely on medications like benzodiazepines or over-the-counter sleep aids, which may be effective in the short term but do not address the underlying neurological causes of insomnia. This is where neurofeedback therapy provides a deeper, brain-based approach.

What Is Neurofeedback and How Does It Work?

Neurofeedback is a form of biofeedback that measures brainwave activity and helps individuals train their brains through real-time feedback. During sessions, sensors are placed on the scalp to monitor brainwave patterns. The individual receives auditory or visual cues when their brainwaves move toward healthier patterns.

For those struggling with insomnia, neurofeedback focuses on regulating brainwave frequencies, particularly increasing alpha and theta waves that are associated with relaxation and deep sleep, while reducing high beta waves linked to anxiety and hyperarousal.

Why Neurofeedback Is Effective for Adult Insomnia

Using neurofeedback for adult insomnia has shown positive results in both research and clinical practice. By improving self-regulation of brain activity, individuals often experience:

  • Faster sleep onset
  • Deeper, more restorative sleep
  • Reduction in night-time awakenings
  • Better mood and daytime functioning

A study published in Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback found that participants who underwent neurofeedback training reported improved sleep quality and reduced sleep latency without the use of medication. Another study in Clinical EEG and Neuroscience demonstrated long-term improvements in sleep for adults with insomnia who completed neurofeedback therapy.

What to Expect During Neurofeedback Therapy

At Connected Brain Counseling, we begin with a brain mapping session using qEEG technology. This allows us to assess the client’s brainwave patterns and identify areas of dysregulation that may be contributing to sleep disturbances.

From there, a customized neurofeedback protocol is developed. Most clients begin to notice improvements after several sessions, with full results typically observed after 20–40 sessions, depending on the individual’s response and severity of symptoms.

neurofeedback for addiction recoveryIs Neurofeedback Safe and Long-Lasting?

Yes. Neurofeedback is non-invasive, drug-free, and has no significant side effects. It helps the brain re-learn how to achieve healthy patterns, often producing long-lasting results. Unlike medications, which stop working when discontinued, the benefits of neurofeedback often persist after treatment ends.

Who Can Benefit from Neurofeedback for Insomnia?

This therapy is ideal for adults who:

  • Struggle with falling or staying asleep
  • Experience anxiety-related insomnia
  • Want to avoid or reduce reliance on sleep medications
  • Have tried other treatments without success

Whether insomnia is a new challenge or a long-standing issue, neurofeedback for adult insomnia offers a brain-based solution grounded in neuroscience.

Sydney Focht, MA, LPC

Clinical Director & Counselor

I specialize in working with women in their 20s to 50s who struggle with self-worth, self-esteem, and the guilt that often comes with prioritizing themselves. Finding self-trust and the ability to feel worthy of happiness are common topics in my work. My clients tend to put off therapy because they downplay their struggles, describing their pain as ‘not that big of a deal.’ Many of them grew up in households where expressing emotions wasn’t encouraged and they are still looking for security now. My goal is to create a space where you feel completely free to be yourself—no pressure, no expectations. Therapy with me isn’t about either of us being ‘perfect’—it’s more about you feeling safe, seen, and supported as you figure things out in a way that works for you. I prioritize meaningful conversations that get to the heart of the issue, getting to the root and out of surface level conversation quickly. Going through my own therapy has given me a deeper understanding of what it’s like to be in the client’s seat, and it’s made me even more passionate about helping others find the support that truly works for them. My clients describe me as focused, compassionate, nonjudgmental, and down-to-earth. I truly love what I do and that comes through in my work! I’m a person-centered therapist, but I often integrate elements of Motivational Interviewing, CBT, and IFS.
